The creations of a region’s artists are rooted in the land, kindled by a certain lay of its horizon, informed by its history and myth, and animated by the people who live upon it. This “spirit of place” has been inspiring people for generations, and it’s at the heart of The Wittliff, the keystone that joins our varied collections.
The Wittliff Collections were founded at Texas State University by Austin screenwriter and photographer Bill Wittliff and his wife, Sally. Our mission is to preserve and share the artistic process that springs from the Southwestern imagination.
Each year, thousands of students, researchers and visitors engage with the Wittliff’s collections and discover how the unique character of a region — its spirit of place — shapes its people, their culture and their creative arts. We invite you to join us on this continuing journey.
