Admission to the Wittliff Collections is free.
Each year the Wittliff Collections present several exhibitions mounted from the literary and photographic repositories. Often the shows are in concert with a new volume being published in one of the two book series, and each new exhibition is celebrated with a public reception and special program (see Events).
Recently expanded, the gallery spaces now offer four to five exhibitions on view alongside the Lonesome Dove Collection, which is on permanent display. Scheduling at least one hour to visit is recommended.
Exhibitions from the Southwestern Writers Collection are built around an individual archive or present a cohesive theme with materials drawn from across the literary, film, and music holdings. Original manuscripts, journals, typewriters and musical instruments, lyrics, maps, books, drawings, personal letters, editorial correspondence, snapshots, and so much more illuminate the lives and creative processes of our region’s word-based artists.
Exhibitions from the Southwestern & Mexican Photography Collection have been described as “world class” by critics and scholars on both sides of the border. One show might focus on the important work of a singular photographer. Others are curated around an idea or subject from the many thousands of photographs in the permanent holdings, including the Wittliff’s collection of modern and contemporary imagery from Mexico—one of the most significant archives of its kind in the U.S.
