In February 1983, Sam Shepard's play Fool for Love premiered at San Francisco's Magic Theater starring Ed Harris and Kathy Baker. Shepard directed the production and this spiral notebook records his directorial notes for the cast. In 1985, Robert Altman directed the film version of Fool for Love, starring Shepard.
