East Texas native Joe R. Lansdale began donating his literary papers to the Southwestern Writers Collection/The Wittliff Collections in 1992. This extensive collection totals over 20 large boxes of material, along with many rare books and other publications.
 
Listed below is an archival inventory of the Lansdale holdings. Note that the material has been received in a series of separate gifts from the author, and so there are different inventories for differnt donations. Please contact the Archivist for details about access to the Lansdale Collection.

Biographical Note (compiled in 1992) 
Joe R. Lansdale was born October 28, 1951 in Gladewater, Texas.  A freelance writer since 1981, Lansdale has written horror, science fiction, westerns and mysteries.  He has expressed a preference for short stories but has also written novels, comic scripts, screenplays and stage plays.   He has edited several short story anthologies and has contributed to numerous genre magazines.  All his works are informed by his life-long immersion in the atmosphere of deep East Texas. Lansdale was awarded the Bram Stoker award for "Night They Missed the Horror Show" in 1989 and for "On the Far Side of the Cadillac Desert With Dead Folks" in 1990.
 
 
Scope and Contents 
The records date from 1985 to 1992 and contain manuscripts, galley proofs, comic book art, scripts and realia.  It includes Lansdale's novels, short stories, comic book scripts, anthologies, and screenplays.  There are also Lansdale's introductions to the work of others as well as screenplay renditions of Lansdale works by other writers.  
The material is arranged chronologically within each series.
 
Series Descriptions 
Series I:  Works by Lansdale, 1985-1992
Boxes 1-3
 The majority of the material in this series is manuscripts, some marked by the editor.  Artwork and galley proofs are also included.  The files are arranged in chronological order. Titles include Cold Sweat, an unpublished anthology, The Drive In, The New Frontier: Best of the West 2, By Bizarre Hands, Ice Birds, Savage Season, Cemetery Dance, Batman, The God of the Razor, Weird Western, and Everybody Plays the Fool.  
 
Series II:  Scripts, 1990-1992
Boxes 4-5
 This series is divided into two subseries.  The first represents scripts written by Joe R. Lansdale, including Dead in the West, Drive in Date, Drive By, and Batman: Perchance to Dream. The Batman files represent the development of a script for an animated teleplay.  They include Lansdale's teleplay, revisions by other writers and storyboards The second subseries comprises adaptations of Lansdale's work scripted by others.
